“Okay, there’s another flight going out tonight at seven o’clock,” John said. “We’ll get in at eleven forty-five, God willing. There wasn’t any change fee since the later plane has plenty of empty seats.”

“Yeah, probably because it’s the crappy flight. Who wants to get in that late, then try to find a taxi willing to take us across a treacherous mountain range after midnight?”

John scratched his head and smiled. “Mel, you’re going off the deep end. We aren’t going over Mt. Everest. First, there are taxi drivers everywhere you look. They even wait outside the grocery stores in case someone needs a ride. They’re also good at driving everywhere on the island. They have to be if they ever want to earn any money. Everything is going to be fine. We’ll just get in later than we planned. Let’s relax, have a leisurely dinner, and hang out. You can read your magazine.”

“Or the half dozen books I brought along.”

“You brought books along? What for? I have a ton of things planned.”

“Just as something to fall asleep with.” She glanced up and gave John a sheepish look. “That’s why my backpack is so heavy.”

“What am I going to do with you?”

“Forgive me?”

“You’re forgiven.” He sat down next to her and pulled her close against his chest. He kissed the top of her head. Mel felt his heart beating next to her ear. He wore that same woodsy, spicy scent that made her want him even more, especially since he was taking their mishap so well. “Come on. Let’s find a relaxing bar and see if they have a deck of cards. Do you know how to play anything?”

“No, but I can show you a few magic tricks.”

“Crazy girl, I’ll teach you how to play poker. We have plenty of time on our hands.”
